In 1992 Citybus won the tender from the Hong Kong Government to take over the franchise of 28 routes from China Motor Bus. This network included 26 local Hong Kong Island routes and two cross-harbour routes with a requirement for 100 new air-conditioned buses and 100 non air-conditioned buses.
The air-conditioned double-deck buses included 52 twelve metre Leyland Olympians, which were the first of their type in Hong Kong.
The non air-conditioned buses were purchased second-hand from Singapore and were refurbished to bring them up to standard, prior to entering service.
The name "Network 26" was the brand name given to this network of routes and was applied to most of the buses operating on them, as well as bus stops and publicity.
When initially announced, it was believed
that there were to be two versions of this set, the first, pictured above,
being released in Hong Kong on 11th December, contained Atlantean No 602,
carrying the full Network 26 livery i.e. white roof and coachlines and
Olympian No 352. The UK Set was to contain Atlantean No 638, without the
white roof, this model having been released in the UK in December 1999
as a singe model.
