SMRT Buses commenced operation of their first double decks on Service 972 (Bukit Panjang - Bencoolen St) on 13th July 2014. Three buses - SMB 3501L, SMB 3502J and SMB 3503G, all registered under the Bus Service Enhancement Programme (BSEP), were deployed to operate on the service. Unfortunately, one of them (SMB 3502J) broke down along Whitley Road while returning to Bukit Panjang in the morning. Nevertheless, this is an achievement for SMRT Buses as this is the first time in their 32 years of service that they are operating double deckers. It is also the second public transport operator in Singapore to run double decks after rival operator SBS Transit.

My thanks to Teo Wei Shen for this report.

The electronic signage by Mobitec, which initially looks small on the double-decker, but with the route details displayed it is merely an optical illusion - with the route number and details able to be seen clearly from far. ZF axles for all 3 axles and fitted with Alcoa rims, and seats are supplied by Vogelsitze.

The air-conditioning outlet unfortunately, is non-adjustable though a cool cabin temperature can be expected from the Denso air-conditioning system.

My thanks to Mark Chua for this information.
