The 'Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus' - July 2009/December 2010 |
|
In late July 2009, New World First Bus Volvo
Olympian No. VA54 was noted undergoing work to convert it to open-top.
At the same time, unconfirmed reports stated that VA51-VA55 were being
converted to open-top ready to operate two new tourist routes.
On 8th October 2009, New World First Bus officially announced details of the 'Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus'. The open-top sightseeing services would operate two routes, namely Route H1 (Central Piers - Pokfield Road) and H2 (Central Piers - Happy Valley). A day ticket priced at HK$50 would be available for travel on both routes. Volvo Olympians VA51-55 were indeed converted to open-top and now carry this striking purple livery. Driver training took place on Friday 16th
October with the official launch ceremony taking place on Saturday 17th
after which a special trip was arranged for invited guests, media representatives,
as well as members of Hong Kong Transport Society and Bus Fan World. Revenue
earning operations began on Sunday 18th October. Official details of the service can be found on the New World First Bus/Citybus website - just follow this link (link no longer available). On 15th August 2011, a model of VA51 was issued by 80M Bus Model Shop and details can be found by following this link. In December 2014, the service was restructured with Route H2 being cancelled and route H1 extended to Kowloon side. A second Rickshaw Bus page can be found here and this details the replacement of these Olympians with Dennis Tridents. |
