The model - news of this model first came to light on 13th April 2013, the 80th anniversary of KMB. The model comes in a special presentation box to mark this event. It is believed some were made available for release on the 13th April when KMB held a special event at its Shatin Depot. The general release of the model is planned for May 2013.

The bus4961 was one of the first four double-deckers ordered by Kowloon Motor Bus, entering service on 17th April 1949. It remained in service until January 1980, and in 1982  underwent major reconstruction and restoration to as near original condition as was possible, to provide a suitable "vintage" vehicle for the Company's 1983 Jubilee celebrations, after which it was donated to the Hong Kong Museum of History.
