Brand Hong Kong was launched in 2001 as a government program designed to promote Hong Kong as 'Asia’s World City'.

The idea of 'branding' Hong Kong originated in 1997, when much attention was focused on the handover of Hong Kong to China. There was concern that Hong Kong's ability to remain as an international financial centre as well as a global city. The decision to develop Brand Hong Kong was finally taken by the Government of Hong Kong in 2000.

Extensive research and consultation was undertaken in Hong Kong and internationally, leading to the choice of 'Asia’s world city' as the brand motto that best reflects the city’s traits, while a stylised dragon was considered to best represent the Hong Kong’s visual identity. The government review of 2008-09 was undertaken to identify changes that had taken place in and around the city since 2001, and to incorporate those changes into the brand, which was launched in 2010.

Buses, trams and ferries are regularly decorated in Brand Hong Kong liveries. Buses and trams tend to have Chinese text on the offside and English on the nearside.
In 2010, two trams, 31 and 69, were each decorated in the revised livery, 31 carrying all-over Chinese text whilst 69 carried all-over English text.
It is also normal for at least one Star Ferry to carry the livery.

Several models featuring Brand Hong Kong liveries have been released, these covering all the above modes of transport. The first, issued in December 2002, featured Citybus Dennis Dragon 855 (MB107). After a lengthy gap, a Star Ferry was released in May 2010, this featuring the updated livery. Models of the two trams mentioned above were released in September and October 2011.

A model of the long awaited Kowloon Motor Bus Dennis Dragon was realised on 12th July 2013 when models of both S3N351 and S3N369 were released.

In November 2013 no less than five Asia World City models were released, two further KMB Dennis Dragons, two KMB Wrights Gemini 2 bodied
Volvo B9TLs and a New World First Bus Alexander ALX500 bodied Dennis Trident.
