21st May 2010

In a press release dated 17th May, Volvo Buses announced it has been awarded another supply contract by Kowloon Motor Bus for 115 B9TL double-decker 12-metre buses.

It goes to to read:-

KMB has a fleet of 3,906 buses and in line with their focus of providing passengers with the highest level of comfort and operational efficiency, KMB has since 2008 increased the frequency of issuing supply tenders for new buses.

This most recent supply contract will see Volvo deliver the 115 double-deckers during early 2011 to Hong Kong.

This latest order is added to and will follow on from the 245 Volvo double-decker and single-decker buses already ordered by KMB for delivery during 2010. This continued supply maintains KMB as Volvo’s largest double-deck customer in Asia.

KMB again selected the Volvo 9 litre SCR Euro V compliant engine, which when operated by KMB with cleaner diesel and operational driving system adjustments will contribute to a significant reduction in emission levels.

Wrightbus will again body the 115 double-deckers at the company’s plant in Northern Ireland. This Volvo-Wrightbus partnership continues to have an important strategic link in Asia to key customers KMB in Hong Kong & SBS Transit in Singapore where jointly orders for a total of 440 Volvo B9TL Wrightbus double-deckers are now secured and in the industrial pipeline.

KMB to conduct trial of zero-emission Supercapacitor Bus

The following press release was issued by KMB on 13th May.

'KMB is planning to introduce a zero-emission supercapacitor bus to Hong Kong for a trial in July 2010.

The supercapacitor bus is an electric bus powered by supercapacitor technology. When fully charged, a fully air-conditioned supercapacitor bus can run continuously for 5 km. Unlike trolley buses, the supercapacitor bus does not require an extensive network of continuous overhead cables to operate. Because of its rapid charging speed, the supercapacitor technology is well suited for bus operations, which typically require frequent stops within relatively short distances. Rapid charging can be conducted at bus stops while passengers board and alight, taking approximately 30 seconds for 1 km of power.

Edmond Ho, KMB Managing Director, said, “KMB is committed to environmental protection and has been studying the feasibility of applying various green technologies to buses. We believe the supercapacitor bus holds the best promise in the near term. We are therefore introducing the bus to Hong Kong for a trial.”

The supercapacitor bus is a truly green bus because it produces zero roadside emissions. As the supercapacitor does not rely on chemical reactions to store electrical energy, it is more environmentally friendly than battery-based electric engines. Furthermore, the supercapacitor can most effectively capture energy from regenerative braking, making it more efficient in electricity consumption than trolley buses.

In terms of both economics and environmental performance, the supercapacitor bus is a more attractive technology than other low-emission or zero-emission green bus technologies currently available.

The supercapacitor bus has been in commercial operation in Shanghai for four years and is currently showcased on shuttle bus routes serving the Shanghai World Expo. Positive comments from passengers of the supercapacitor bus include a quieter and smoother ride than that on a conventional bus. Several US cities are currently exploring introducing the supercapacitor bus technology for trials.'

The two resin China Motor Bus Dennis Darts (B0034) from P&T/312 Model have now been released in Hong Kong, although I understand that owing to their popularity, they may be difficult to find. Each version is limited to just 150 pieces.

Creative Master Northcord Ltd has today issued a press release formally confirming the release of Mercedes-Benz Citaro 'bendi-bus' in the colours of Keisei Bus Japan (JB0001), news of which was first reported on this site on 12th April. The total quantity is believed to be 1,000 with  200 pieces destined for the usual CMNL outlets in Australia, China, Hong Kong and UK. I can only assume that the cost saving measures introduced by CMNL include the withdrawal of the usual e-mail notification of the press release and the sending of a sample model, hence the delayed announcement and lack of a photographs.

New pages for the above three models will be added as soon as time allows.
