China Motor Bus

The China Motor Bus Company Limited (CMB) was one of the three major operators in Kowloon prior to 1933, having commenced its operations in 1924. CMB ran its Kowloon services alongside KMB until 1933 when, following the introduction of exclusive regional franchising, it formed the embryo of the present day CMB which, with the advent of the Cross Harbour Tunnel in 1972, was again to run buses on the mainland after a break of 39 years, albeit on joint operation with the Kowloon Company.

In 1992, the Hong Kong Government had become dissatisfied with the performance of CMB and withdrew 25% of their routes and offered them for tender, which Citybus won, commencing the acquired services on 1st september 1993, under the branding "Network 26".

Despite these sanctions, CMB's performance remained poor, and when in 1997 it it was time to submit details of the proposals for the franchises commencing 1st September 1998, CMB failed to deliver. As a result, CMB lost it's franchise, and its routes were put up for tender. New World First Bus succeeded, and commenced it's operations on 1st September 1998.

Models carrying the blue and cream livery of CMB are the most numerous, presumably as a result licences being easier to obtain from a Company no longer operating franchised buses...... any publicity is good publicity!!
